Child Neurology

The first year of training in Child Neurology is the same as in the Adult Neurology program. During the second and third years, trainees are assigned to Child Neurology at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay. Child neurology fellows rotate on several inpatient services during their PGY4 and PGY5 years.

The child neurology Hospitalist Service acts as the consulting service for children and adolescents with neurological disease, and is run by the child neurology fellow working with rotating adult neurology residents. The Neurological Intensive Care Nursery (NICN) treats infants with primary and secondary neurological disorders. UCSF is the birthplace of neurological intensive care in neonates, and here child neurology fellows learn to manage conditions including stroke, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, neonatal seizures and genetic disorders and malformations. Fellows rotating on the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit care for patients admitted for continuous video EEG monitoring to characterize seizure type and localization of epileptogenic foci as preparation for epilepsy surgery. Required electives include training in EEG/EMG, psychiatry and neuropathology. Additional elective time can be devoted to laboratory or clinical research, or to other clinical subspecialties such as neuroradiology or neuro-ophthalmology.

All child neurology fellows are expected to participate in a research project during their residency. Child neurology fellows are able to participate in the flexible residency program, allowing a continuous 6 month period of focused research efforts. The concentrated 6 months of research can only be taken during the child neurology training years.

An example of the typical distribution of rotations:

*Indicates a rotation is split into two 2-week blocks at different points during the year.

During the adult neurology year, residents typically have weekend call 10-12 nights per year. Child Neurology residents have the same distribution of call in the first year as Adult Neurology residents.

During the child neurology residency years, residents are responsible for home call 3-4 months of the year, as well as home call 1-2 weekends per month.
