Welcome to UCSF Neurology Residency! The success of the Neurology Residency Programs at UCSF is directly attributable to the outstanding qualities of our residents, an environment conducive to learning, and the contributions of our faculty as mentors. The excellence of our research and clinical faculty and the diversity of our training hospitals allow us to provide outstanding clinical training and opportunities for residents to begin developing their independent careers in neurology. We attract and match outstanding residency applicants from diverse geographic regions and backgrounds and the residency continues to be a source of immense pride for the Department of Neurology.

The Adult and Child Neurology Residency Programs at UCSF are both within the Department of Neurology. The programs collaborate for trainee education and are supported by a central Education administrative staff. We currently have a total of 11-12 adult neurology and 3 child neurology training positions each year. The adult neurology program offers categorical (R1) positions; residents who wish to spend their R1 year elsewhere are also accommodated. The child neurology program offers a categorical program with UCSF Pediatrics Residency or a linked advanced program with the Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Pediatrics Residency for the R1 and R2 years.

Residents experience core Neurology training at the main academic hospitals for adult and pediatric care, as well as at our main county hospital (Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital) and at the San Francisco Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Residents can choose from a variety of elective experiences, and may take advantage of protected time for research as part of our flexible residency option. The Flexible Residency program is available to all adult and child neurology trainees and allows for up to six months to pursue clinical or laboratory research training and experience, a global health project, a public health project, training as a master clinician, or a medical education project.
