Applicants

The UCSF Department of Neurology has 13-14 PGY-2 Adult Neurology positions. Prerequisites for the Adult Neurology program include completion of eight months of the PGY-1 year (or more) of Internal Medicine. It is not necessary to submit a separate application to the Department of Medicine for the categorical positions.

All applicants must be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in California.

Please Note: All applicants must have a passing score on both the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step I and Step II CK in order to be ranked in the above programs. Scores must be received and uploaded by rank list submission date.

UCSF Eligibility, Recruitment, and Selection Policy

Applications to the Adult Neurology Residency Program should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). For information about registering, please visit their web site at http://www.nrmp.org/, or call them at (866) 617-5834. Applications are open to all who meet the eligibility criteria listed here, and race, gender, or other protected categories or proxies for protected categories are not used in the selection process.

If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school (including from Canada), you must hold a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). This is mandatory for appointment at this institution as well as for licensure in the State of California. You will be required to contact the ECFMG and arrange to take the USMLE. After you pass the examination, including the English test, you will be granted an ECFMG certificate. The address for the ECFMG is as follows: Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates; 3624 Market St., 1st Floor; Philadelphia PA 19104-2685; USA.

You should plan to include three to four letters of recommendation with your application from faculty who know you well and have worked with you. Your letters should optimally include at least one from a neurology faculty member. If you are a PhD student, it is recommended one of the letters be from your PhD mentor.
