Mentorship

Supporting your career development is central to our mission in the UCSF neurology residency. We provide our residents an organized and supportive mentorship structure to ensure your success.

Faculty mentorship:

Mentorship from the Program Directors and Department Chair begins as soon as you match into this program. We always welcome communication by email, text, or phone at any time and for any reason. Residents are also scheduled to meet with one of the Program Directors every 6 months, and the Department Chair at least annually. Faculty mentors are assigned before the Physicianship month, and residents are advised to meet with their faculty mentor at least twice annually.

Peer mentorship:

Each incoming R1 resident is assigned a “big sib” R2 resident by their June start date. This creates a “family peer mentorship unit” of R1-R2-R3-R4 residents. The department encourages these peer mentorship groups to meet by providing funding for refreshments for their gatherings.

Informal mentorship:

Sometimes the most meaningful mentorship relationships happen informally. These relationships might be with your Principal Investigator for a neuroscience research project, or with a clinical faculty working in your field of interest. Our faculty are approachable and recognize the privilege of working with our residents, making it easy to form supportive mentoring relationships.
