Applicants

Applications to the Adult Neurology Residency Program should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). For information about registering, please visit their web site at http://www.nrmp.org/, or call them at (866) 617-5834. 

If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must hold a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). This is mandatory for appointment at this institution as well as for licensure in the State of California. You will be required to contact the ECFMG and arrange to take the USMLE. After you pass the examination, including the English test, you will be granted an ECFMG certificate. A PTAL is no longer required due to new Medical Board of California licensure effective January 1, 2020.

You should plan to include three to four letters of recommendation with your application from faculty who know you well and have worked with you. Your letters should optimally include at least one from a neurology faculty member. If you are a PhD student, it is recommended one of the letters be from your PhD mentor.

Categorical – programs that begin in the PGY–1 year and provide the training required for board certification in medical specialties. (UCSF Neurology has nine to ten Categorical positions available each year)
Advanced – programs that begin in the PGY–2 year after a year of prerequisite training. (UCSF Neurology has one to three positions Advanced positions available each year)
Preliminary – one-year programs beginning in the PGY–1 year that provide prerequisite training for advanced programs. (UCSF Internal Medicine does not offer Preliminary positions)

September 27, 2023– ERAS applications and MSPEs are released to residency programs

Once your application is complete on ERAS and available to UCSF Neurology, it will be forwarded to the Neurology Residency Selection Committee Members for review. Applicants who are considered to be strong candidates for the UCSF Neurology Residency Training Program will be contacted to arrange for a virtual interview.
 

For the 2023 ERAS^® cycle, our program will be collecting and reviewing data from applicants’ supplemental ERAS applications. Completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

In its second year of use, the supplemental ERAS application is designed to help applicants share more information about themselves and assist our program in finding applicants that fit our program’s setting and mission. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.

The supplemental ERAS application provides:

• geographic preferences (by division and by urban or rural setting); 
• information about an applicant’s most meaningful experiences and other impactful life events, if applicable; and
• program signals.

The supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform that is separate from the MyERAS application and must be completed between August 1 and September 16, 2022.

Prior to the interview day, applicants are invited to our Wednesday afternoon didactic or Grand Rounds lectures after which they will have a social event with our residents. Thursday morning, the applicants will have an overview of our residency program followed by another opportunity to interact with our residents, and then interview with our selection committee members. We estimate you will have completed all interviews by 6:30 pm Eastern Time on Thursday.

1. Minimum USMLE Scores – you must have a passing score
2. US Clinical Experience Requirements – you must have completed a minimum of 4 months of evaluated clinical experience in the US
3. Graduate Year Cutoff – you must have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years to be considered for an interview
